UNEP - KemI Project

UNEP-KemI Project on “Development of Legal and Institutional Infrastructures for the Sound Management of Chemicals in Developing Countries and Countries with Economies in Transition”

Sound Management of Chemicals will depend on the development of national institutions and infrastructures including legislation, regulation and assessment of chemicals together with monitoring and enforcement of these. However, most developing countries and many countries with economies in transition have not managed to establish the necessary national legal, technical and institutional infrastructures as yet.

One of the major gaps highlighted is the absence of framework legislation regulating the obligations of manufacturers, importers and professional users of chemicals. The Swedish Chemicals Agency (KEMI) and UNEP Chemicals have therefore collaborated to develop a project to assist developing countries and countries in transition in the expansion of such infrastructure.

This section provides information on each of the components of the project as well as links to the relevant documents.
