Proceedings of the Melbourne Workshop (Dec. 2005) Open burning of biomass such as forest fires and burns in agriculture were identified by many developing countries as the major source of PCDD/PCDF in their national inventories. The Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage and UNEP Chemicals – with funding from the Canada POPs Fund - organized this workshop to gather information on (i) burning practices and PCDD/PCDF emission factors in open burning processes, (ii) contributions from these activities to the global loading of PCDD/PCDF, (iii) sound and scientifically based ways of understanding the contribution of uncontrolled combustion to releases of unintentional POPs and how to effectively reduce releases from this source; and (iv) identification of areas for experimental studies using laboratory, medium scale or field experiments to determine emission factors |
