Artisanal
and Small Scale Gold Mining Regional Project in South East Asia and
South America
Quick Start Programme (QSP)
Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM)
UNEP initiated regional projects in South
East Asia and South America under the Quick Start Programme of the
Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management in cooperation
with a number of interested partners. The project will contribute to
existing capacity building efforts to tackle this challenging issue,
relates to protecting human health and the environment from mercury in
artisanal and small scale gold mining (ASGM) and contribute to existing
capacity building efforts to address this challenging issue.
Project Objectives
i) Government commitment in addressing ASGM is secured.
ii) Multi-stakeholder strategic plans for mercury reductions in ASGM
developed, building upon on-going activity to address mercury and
artisanal mining and building capacity for regional collaboration for
addressing ASGM.
iii) Regional collaboration and coordination is enhanced.
Project Outcomes
i) National Steering Committee is formed and workplan to
implement the national aspect of the project is prepared.
ii) Guidance on the development of a national strategic plan relating to
mercury releases in ASGM is developed.
iii) Multi-stakeholder national strategic plan for ASGM is developed
relevant countries participating in the projects.
iv) Regional collaboration and coordination is enhanced through exchange
of experiences and lessons learned on a regional level.
v) Stakeholders identified. Coordination of national stakeholders as
well as public participation in activities is improved.
A draft guidance document is part of the
commitment of UNEP to the Quick Start project. It is intended as
guidance for Governments in the development of a national strategic plan
relating to improving practices and working conditions in artisanal and
small scale gold mining and reducing its impact on the global
environment. It aims to assist in uniting various levels of Government,
miners, civil society and the public in a common mission to improve the
quality of life in artisanal and small scale gold mining communities.
Any part of the text in this document may be used in drafting the
