Global Mercury Assessment report
drafting process

As part of the implementation of Governing Council decision 21/5, UNEP established a Working Group to assist in the technical review and finalization of the global mercury assessment report to be considered by the Governing Council at its next session in September 2003.  After a first review by correspondence (1st draft of 25 April 2002), a meeting of the Working Group would be organized to finalize the revised draft assessment report (revised draft of 17 July 2002).  This meeting took place in Geneva, Switzerland from 9 to 13-September 2002.

The Working Group reviewed the draft assessment report during the meeting and agreed to a number of changes and additions.  The Working Group agreed to a process to finalize the assessment report and requested the secretariat to circulate the revised version of the draft report by 4 October 2002 to members of the Working Group.  It was agreed that members would be given three to four weeks to comment on that revised version and submit their comments to the secretariat by 1 November 2002.  The secretariat would in light of any additional comments finalize the report and submit it to the Governing Council in December together with the key findings of the assessment.  The final version of the document is available below.
