Supporting
country efforts
to take action on mercury pollution
Overview
Available funding will
be used to support partnerships, projects and activities that aim at
assisting developing countries and countries with economies in transition
in understanding the nature and magnitude of the mercury problem and in
developing tools and strategies to mitigate mercury pollution. This might
include:
-
Promoting the development of national inventories
of mercury uses and releases;
-
Developing strategies for enhanced outreach and
risk communication activities to reach at-risk populations, including
sensitive populations;
-
Increasing public awareness and promotion of
mercury-free products, technologies and processes, using and/or with
environmentally friendly alternatives;
-
Promoting application and sharing of information
on best available techniques and measures to reduce mercury emissions
from point sources;
-
Promoting reduction of risk of exposure related
to mercury in products such as batteries, cosmetics and thermometers and
to production processes such as chlor-alkali production and small-scale
artisanal mining using mercury through, for example, when warranted,
introduction of bans or restrictions on uses;
-
Increasing awareness of environmentally sound
recycling practices and promoting the development of environmentally
sound waste management, disposal and remediation practices;
-
Developing national implementation plans to
reduce mercury uses and releases ;
-
Conducting training and workshops on various
sectoral or regionally relevant topics;
-
Improving global understanding of international
mercury emission sources, fate and transport.
Additional information
on programme priorities are outlined in UNEP GC decision 24/3 IV.
Funding information
-
The fund will support capacity-building projects
aimed at assisting developing countries and countries with economies in
transition.
-
The maximum amount per project is USD 100,000;
however, projects under USD 50,000 may be given preference, as may also
be the case for projects with an element of co-funding from other
sources and/or substantial in kind contributions.
-
The approval of projects will take considerations
on geographic and sectoral balance into account.
-
Confirmation of receipt of proposals will be sent
to the submitting proponent.
-
Funding available
for such projects varies during the year according to fund available for
projects in the UNEP Mercury Trust Fund. The Trust Fund relies on
voluntary contributions.
Submission
of project proposals
Governments are
invited to submit project proposals, using the attached proposal format (PDF
and
Word). The proposal must be accompanied by a signed letter clearly
identifying the institution supporting the proposal.The format is intended
to assist the proponent to provide an overview of the planned project, its
objectives, and intended outcomes, estimated costs, etc. Submission of a
project proposal does not entail any commitment from UNEP's side to fund
the project, however, unfunded proposals might be referred to other donors
interested in supporting other related projects. Once the project is
identified as a candidate for funding, additional information may be
requested from the proponent regarding a more specific work plan with
timeframes and detailed budget for the various activities.
