                                 Introduction

Since its inception in 1978, the Legal File provides information on existing policies for control and regulation of hazardous chemicals at national, regional and global levels.

The File is designed to provide an overview of legislation on specific substances, to indicate how they are regulated in specific situations and to cover different legislative approaches in different countries. The original legal text is used in all cases for the extraction of the data.

Areas of highest priority for inclusion into the Legal File are: regulations on pesticides (including banned pesticides, use restrictions and maximum residue limits in food); and with regard to any other type of chemical: threshold values and emission standards in air, water and soil; occupational exposure limits and restrictions or prohibitions concerning manufacture, use and sale.

Presently the Legal File covers about 53,000 records for more than 10,000 substances from 13 countries and 5 international organizations. The File offers a unique possibility to compare regulatory actions of different countries on specific chemicals.

The Legal File is maintained through international cooperation and contributions of countries. Countries which are interested in contributing their data to the Legal File are kindly invited to contact UNEP Chemicals.
