Title Various surveys for dioxins and PCBs in foods and dietary exposure of UK

consumers to these chemicals as part of programme of food chemical surveillance.

Also statutory monitoring of PCBs to meet requirements of EC Directives.

Description Food Standards Agency surveys primarily carried out to estimate the dietary

exposure to dioxins and PCBs of UK consumers of various age groups and other

critical groups. Current projects cover shellfish; infant formulae; fish oil dietary

supplements and licensed medicines; cows' milk; fats and oils used in food

manufacture; and fruit and vegetables. There is also current work on animal feeding

stuffs. Planned surveys for dioxins and PCBs include meat; eggs; fish; milk

products and baby foods. Survey for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in

samples representing the UK diet. Statutory monitoring for PCBs (and PAHs)

covers shellfish.

Area Most of the samples were collected in England. However national distribution

throughout the UK applies to infant formulae; fish oils; fats and oils and fruit and

vegetables. Shellfish samples were landed in England or Scotland or were

imported. Cows' milk samples were collected from throughout the UK. For future

surveys samples will generally be collected throughout the UK.
