National Situation Regarding DDT
South Africa
1. Brief country profile

DDT-related Activity
Reported status Comments
DDT is produced
No1
DDT is actually used in Disease Vector Control (i.e. IRS)
Yes1

The amount of DDT used was 15.785 kg in 2001, 14.508 kg in 2002 and 6.483 kg in 2003.1

The amount of DDT used was 71.480 kg in 2003, 82.816 kg in 2004 and 87.433 kg in 2005.1

Reported DDT use in:
2003: 53.610 kg a.i.;
2004: 62.112 kg a.i.;
2005: 65.575 kg a.i. 6.3

Reported DDT use in:
2006: 70 tons a.i.;
2007: 78 tons a.i.;
2008: 77 tons a.i.;
2009: 70 tons a.i. 6.5

In 1995/1996 144.000 kg of DDT was used for IRS. In 2000 7.000 kg was used.5

DDT is used for disease vector control in accordance with WHO Recommendations and requirements of the Stockholm Convention.2

The use of DDT had been phased out at the beginning of 1999 and replaced with pyrethroids. However, DDT was reintroduced due to resistance of mosquitoes to pyrethroids.3

In 1997, DDT was replaced with deltamethrin and cyfluthrin but mosquito resistance to these prompted limited reintroduction of DDT in 2000.5

The major malaria vector control strategy in South Africa is IRS using DDT (50%) and pyrethroids (50%). This consumes approximately 100 t of DDT annually.5

DDT is imported
Yes1 From China.1
DDT is exported
No1
Purchase/Use is regulated
No Data Withdrawn except for use in malaria vector control.3
DDT alternatives are used
Yes1,5 Biological and chemical control.1

A winter larviciding programme using Vectobac (Bti) was used and reduced the mosquito breeding during winter months, offering positive benefits during the summer months in minimizing vector densities.5

Has a national vector control policy
Yes1
IVM strategy is implemented
Yes1 IVM process was initiated by WHO in 2001 and IVM implementation is undergoing in this GEF Project as an environmentally sustainable alternative.5
Hold usable stocks of DDT
Yes1 There are 6.000 kg of DDT usable stocks, but no obsolete stocks were reported (2001-2003). For 2003-2005 stocks were 261.704 kg, of which 244.000 kg were forseen to fill orders for DDT in the SADC region.1
