National Situation Regarding DDT
India
1. Brief country profile

DDT-related Activity
Reported status Comments
DDT is produced
Yes2 M/s Hindustan Insecticide Limited (HIL) is the sole manufacturer of DDT in the country.2

DDT is produced and used as an intermediate in the manufacture of dicofol (with DDT as impurity not exceeding 0.1%).3

DDT is actually used in Disease Vector Control (i.e. IRS)
Yes2 DDT is used mainly as IRS in diseases vector control (Malaria and Kala-azar).2,5

In the period 2002-2003, the amounts of DDT used were 12.926 t for Malaria control and 3.234,85 t for Kala-Azar control.5

India has reduced the reliance on DDT use, from over 8.500 t in 1997 to about 6.000 t/yr actually for vector control, mainly against malaria.5

Currently, India is facing to increasing mortalities and morbidities from malaria and the pressure to revert to DDT is intense.5

From 1990-1996 average annual use of DDT for DVC in the Nadiad subdividion was 7,7 t.9

Reported DDT use in:
2000: 3 087 tons a.i.;
2001: 4 893 tons a.i.;
2002: 4 273 tons a.i.;
2003: 5 243 tons a.i.;
2004: 5 268 tons a.i.;
2005: 5 092 tons a.i.;
2006: 3 731 tons a.i.;
2007: 3 479 tons a.i.;
2008: 4 107 tons a.i.;
2009: 3 999 tons a.i. 6.5

DDT is imported
No data
DDT is exported
No data
Purchase/Use is regulated
Yes3 In 1989, DDT was banned for agricultural use and restricted for  public health purposes to 10.000 t.3
DDT alternatives are used
Yes5

Chemical control is the most used alternative. Environmental and biological control methods are applied to address local problems of disease transmission in specific settings.
Malathion and synthetic pyrethroids (deltamethrin, cyfluthrin, alphacypermethrin and lambdacyhalothrin : 200-400 t/yr in 1999-2002) were reported used.
5

Guppies and carp have been used in larvae control, as well as expanded polystyrene to cover breeding areas.9

Has a national vector control policy
Yes5 Further reduction in use of DDT relies in strengthening sub-national and local capacities for vector control within the framework of IVM.5
IVM strategy is implemented
No5 This project will demonstrate that IVM strategies are cost-effective, environmentally sound and sustainable.5
Hold usable stocks of DDT
Yes3 There are stockpiles and waste accumulations of obsolete DDT stored in warehouses and at abandoned production sites.3
Case Studies on DDT exist?
Yes9
