National Situation Regarding DDT
Ethiopia
1. Brief country profile

DDT-related Activity
Reported status Comments
DDT is produced
Yes2 DDT is being produced locally. In March 2000, a contract was signed with a Chinese company for the design, manufacture and supply of equipment for DDT 75% WP. This should increase production to 700 t of DDT 75% per year.3
DDT is actually used in Disease Vector Control (i.e. IRS)
Yes2 DDT is being produced and used for Malaria vector control as IRS in accordance WHO Recommendations and Guidelines.2,4,5

In Ethiopia, the IRS involves the use of approximately 360 t of DDT annually.5

Case of illegal use for agricultural pest control.4

For the period 2000-2005 annual organochlorine insecticide (assumed DDT) use for malaria control was between 255.000 kg and 298.000 kg.6, 6.3

Use in tons a.i. reported 6.5
2006: 406 tons
2007: 710 tons
2008: 1 445 tons
2009: 781 tons

DDT is imported
Yes4 The MOH, over the past couple of years, has imported an average 500 t of DDT 75% WP to be used in vector control for indoor spraying of houses.3

DDT is currently imported, but there are no reliable records of past imports of DDT.4

DDT is exported
No data There is no information on export.4
Purchase/Use is regulated
Yes3

Severely restricted. Accepted for public health protection.3

DDT alternatives are used
Yes5 This project will demonstrate cost-effective, environmentally sound, and locally appropriate alternatives to DDT, ensuring their sustainable use through strengthened national and local capacity for malaria control.5

The national malaria control programme emphasises alternative strategies such as anti-larval measures, modifications to physical environment and efficient water management.5

Has a national vector control policy
Yes5
IVM strategy is implemented
No data IVM process was initiated by WHO in 2001 and IVM implementation is ongoing in this GEF Project as an environmentally-sustainable alternative.5
Hold usable stocks of DDT
Yes4

A preliminary inventory of POPs and other pesticides found usable DDT stocks of 160.573 kg and obsolete DDT stocks of 55.720 kg.4

According to the FAO, 3.343 litres and 11.225 kg of obsolete DDT stockpiles have been identified in the country.5

There are stockpiles of POPs. The exact quantity is not clear but it is at least 2.000 t in around 40 sites. There is, however, an on-going project on obsolete pesticides.3
