Finalization of
the reviews of scientific information
on lead and cadmium
prior UNEP Governing Council at its twenty-sixth session
The Executive Director
of UNEP, Achim Steiner, through his letter dated 26 March 2009, refers to
decision 25/5 on chemicals management relating to lead and cadmium, and
mercury adopted by GC.25/GMEF on 20 February 2009.
Through this decision
it is noted that further action is needed to address the challenges
posed by lead and cadmium.
A letter dated 9
November 2009 from Per Bakken, Head Chemicals Branch, UNEP Division
of Technology, Industry and Economics refers to Governing Council
decision requesting UNEP to continue to address the data and information
gaps identified in its reviews of scientific information on lead and
cadmium. UNEP is to finalize these reviews in line with decisions 24/3
of 9 February 2007 and 23/9 of 25 February 2005, and to report to the
Governing Council at its twenty-sixth session with a view to informing
discussion on the need for global action in relation to lead and
cadmium. The requested
information should be submitted to UNEP Chemicals by 28 February 2010.
In order to ensure an
open, transparent and inclusive process, all information received by
UNEP Chemicals is made available on a running basis through this
webpage, as follows:

Non-governmental organizations
The draft final
reviews of scientific information on lead and cadmium (November 2008),
together with their relevant companion documents, have been amended to
include the above-mentioned submissions and circulated
via email to the members of the Lead
and Cadmium Working Group (Deadline for comments: 5 November
2010. Current comments can be accessed

Once finalised, the reviews of scientific information on lead and
cadmium, and their companion documents, will be presented to the twenty-sixth session of the Governing
Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum with a view to informing
discussions on the need for global action in relation to lead and
cadmium.
