Emission factors for open burning of biomass (2007-2008)

UNEP Chemicals Branch is executing this project for the Stockholm Convention Secretariat to determine emission factors for unintentional POPs from open burning of biomass - Toolkit Category 6. The project will measure releases (to air and with solid residues) from burning of biomass, simulating forest fires and burning of sugarcane by comparing field measurements with laboratory scale results. The data will be used to derive emission factors to air and to land, which then will be submitted to the Toolkit Expert Group for consideration of inclusion in the next version of the Toolkit.

 The overall goal of this project is to assist developing countries and countries with economies in transition to develop reliable release inventories for unintentional POPs listed in Annex C of the Stockholm Convention and national implementation plans for the Stockholm Convention. It is a direct response to decision SC-2/5 and SC-3/6 to improve the Toolkit.
