Preparations for the

25th session of the UNEP Governing Council /
Global Ministerial Environment Forum

(GC-25/GMEF), 16 – 20 February 2009, Nairobi, Kenya

The 25th Meeting of UNEP's Governing Council will take place in Nairobi from 16-20 February 2009. The Governing Council will consider the report prepared pursuant to Governing Council decision 24/3 on chemical management, which includes the mercury programme, and lead and cadmium.

The documents of relevance before the Governing Council include:

  • UNEP/GC/25/5 - Chemicals management, including mercury: Report of the Executive Director

  • UNEP/GC.25/5.Add.1 Report to Governing Council on the outcomes of discussions at the second meeting of the Ad Hoc Open Ended Working Group on Mercury;

  • UNEP/GC/25/5.Add.2 – Waste management;

  • UNEP/GC.25/INF/22 –  Report on activities of the Inter-Organization Programme for the Sound Management of Chemicals and its participating organizations to implement the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management;

  • UNEP/GC.25/INF/23 – Draft final reviews of scientific information on lead, along with their appendices on ‘Overview of existing and future national actions, including legislation, relevant to lead and cadmium’ and the compilation of existing risk management measures;

  • UNEP/GC.25/INF/23.Add.1 Draft final review of scientific information on lead. Addendum Study on the health and environmental effects of the movement of products containing lead, cadmium and mercury in Africa 1)

  • UNEP/GC.25/INF/24 – Draft final reviews of scientific information on cadmium, along with their appendices on ‘Overview of existing and future national actions, including legislation, relevant to lead and cadmium’, the compilation of existing risk management measures;

  • UNEP/GC.25/INF/25 - Full report of the second meeting of the Open Ended Working Group on mercury, including national and regional statements;
